The current global pandemic has reinforced the reality that we live in a highly complex, ever-changing world, and that if we have any chance of tackling some of the big global challenges ahead of us, there is a need for leadership that is highly resilient and adaptable to meet the inevitable curve balls the future will throw at us.

 

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are discussed at almost every philanthropic gathering. But what accompanying actions are needed to make a real impact? Are these the building blocks destined to historically reshape the foundation playing field? Or are they just the latest foundation fig leaf for inequitable practices that started with the birth of the paternalistic, charity mindset?

 

This podcast is an opportunity to hear from a woman stepping into a major philanthropic leadership role, in her own words. Kim Tobin is Michigan State University's new vice president for University Advancement and joined the MSU Today podcast to talk about her role and her leadership philosophy.

 

Mentoring is a crucial piece of effective leadership, in any philanthropic role. The work of a skilled mentor, one who provides ongoing support and guidance as well as institutional and cultural knowledge, can reverberate for decades. While the focus for this article is education, it explores how to create a culture of mentorship to engage and encourage mentorship at all levels in ways that translate to any philanthropic team.
